Happily Rustic is owned by myself, Hayley and my husband Scott Kellard, we're based in Stalybridge, Greater Manchester and we create unique wood slice photo gifts using natural wood slices, repurposing wood that would otherwise be used as fire wood.
We sell a range of wood slice photo gifts, including plaques in various shapes and sizes, fridge magnets, coasters, christmas tree decorations and keyrings.
Did you know wood is the traditional gift for your 5th wedding anniversary?
Happily Rustic was launched in August 2018 by me, Hayley Kellard. I had recently lost my job as a retail Buyer due to unknown health issues that were making commuting and working full time extremely difficult.
I did have good days though and I didn't want to not work at all, it's not good for my mental health, plus I've always had an entrepreneurial spirit so I decided I would start my own business.
I stumbled across the idea for wood slice photo gifts after seeing some logs on a walk with my husband and the dogs, I searched online to see if anybody else was selling these in the UK and was shocked to find nobody really was, there were a couple of sellers on Etsy that were selling something similar but it wasn't exactly what I wanted to sell.
So I started practising, using photos of my husband, myself and our dogs (I still have these next to my desk now.) After a few weeks of practising, I decided I was ready and I launched my Etsy shop. This website followed a few months later.
Finally a Diagnosis!
In February 2019, after nearly 2 years of being unwell, I was finally given a diagnosis of POTS - Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, a condition that affects the autonomic nervous system and affects all different areas of your body. I was given medication that I will have to take for the rest of my life but it's massively improved my quality of life.
The Adventure Continues
The business has grown beyond my wildest dreams, achieving over 4000 sales in less than two years. I was struggling to keep up with the demand on my own so we made the huge decision for Scott to leave his job as a Head Greenkeeper and join the business full time.
It took me some time to find a supplier of quality wood slices, that understood what I needed and was reliable. Luckily I found somebody just down the road and we've been working together for over 18 months now.
We only repurpose wood, trees are never cut down just for products. The wood we use would typically be cut up and used for fire wood if we didn't purchase it for our products.
Our wood is dried out for a minimum of 12 months to ensure it’s as dry as possible, the drier the wood, the less chance of cracks occurring.
We keep our wood as natural as possible, we sand it to give a smooth finish but we don’t use chemicals or treat the wood in any way
We make a monthly donation to The Woodland Trust to help replant new trees in the UK.
From day one I wanted to have some values that were important to me, as the business and team grow, I will ensure we all follow these in every aspect of the business.
